Hi Friends!!

It’s day 12/61, and this blindman has walked over 110 miles and i’ve just earned my 250,000 steps badge this morning…Yes i’m tired and hurting especially through this heatwave! 😰 Can you help this charity close to my heart? Please donate or share everywhere (or both, lol)! ❤️

Type 1 diabetes never gives Sarah a rest, so I don’t want to have one either during my fundraising challenge!

I’ve had 2 kind donations this week…The 1st from my lovely wife Sarah and the 2nd friend from Dayle (blogger from the USA) which is not only humbling and motivating, it also inspires me to keep going through this endurance challenge and keep fighting to help this great charity that’s close to my heart! 💪🏼 😀

Day 10/61: Shoe lace charms, Soundscape & heatwaves! ☀️

Hi Friends!!

I’ve already pounded over 100 miles wearing my super bright Inov8 Trailfly G300 max trail shoes…And as a reward for earning the first donation Diabetes UK sent me some metal shoe lace charms to wear during the challenge:

“When you receive your first donation we’ll send you a shoelace charm as a special reminder that every step counts and we must always look after our feet. We’ll post this to you automatically if you’ve opted to receive rewards. We’ll send these out throughout the challenge.”

Sarah tells me they look fantastic and fit perfectly on the trail shoe. I’m defo looking after my feet with these stupendous shoes…I really don’t want to burn them out but the challenge is worth it!! 💪🏼 😀

About The Blind Navigation Soundscape app…😲

I’ve been out on my trail again this morning, finding places where i can add new waypoints along my journey which will help me. I’ve now placed 14 audio markers which the app calls out the title and description i’ve typed, it’s distance from where i’m walking…And it beeps when i’m facing as it tracks my head movement like a compass with the new apple AirPods (it’s fantastic). It also calls out nearby roads, paths, points of interest, bus stops, crossings etc…I’m starting to like it a lot as i learn more and more, I’m finding places i never knew existed, lol! 🤣

My Steps So Far…💪🏼

At the time of this post i’m just over 208,000 steps after 10 days! I’m really looking forwards for when the weather cools down so i can get more steps in, but it’s not happening any time soon! 💪🏼 🤣

Day 9/61: Soundscape, indoor workouts & more sun! ☀️

Hi Friends!!

Today was not only another hot 29˚C, but i had to wait in for some deliveries…Which meant i had to fight for my steps today! 💪🏼 I managed an early quick few miles before the start time of the deliveries, as i wanted to try out my new ‘Soundscape’ app on my trail. I’m at the beginners stage of the app so just managed to place some map markers along my route, to see if my earphones can pick them up in 360˚ audio beacon targeting thingy, which would be cool and very useful when i get lost!! 😀

I also did some workouts on apple fitness plus in my living room to try and keep my steps up…I managed quite a few steps whilst bombing around the room, lol! 🤣 Now i’ll probably spend the rest of my challenge trying to map out my trail with audio markers! 💪🏼 😀

About The Soundscape app…😲

“Microsoft Soundscape is a free iOS app that provides travelers who are visually impaired or blind information about places around them in the environment. Soundscape will announce names of stores, streets and the direction you are traveling. This app is designed to “fill in the gaps” in the traveler’s mental map. Soundscape creates a 3D audio map as you travel through the environment.”

Me and my lovely wife Sarah constantly talk about the palm trees (well everything at Southern Palms, Barbados), so as the theme for today is “Leaves” i just had to post the photos of the view from our room…Awww we miss our fave place on earth! ☀️ 😀

Day 8/61: ☀️ Heatwaves, awards & more steps!

Hi Friends!!

Yeah i’m still walking, lol! 🤣 It’s day 8 of this monumental 61 day challenge, and i have another heatwave to look forwards too for nearly 2 weeks! 😨 It’s 29˚C today and i’m getting my well rounded tan as i walk my circular lap…Well at least that’s a bonus, lol! 🤣 Walking in the sun is an absolute killer for me, as the brightness fries my eyes, brain and drains me really fast no matter what hat, cap or sunglasses combo i try…It’s just the sight i have to put up with..At least i get a break when i’m asleep, and i even dream fully sighted some of the time which is weird…But brittle Type One Diabetes never gives Sarah a rest so i’ll stop complaining, lol…And it’s why i’m doing this challenge without a rest day too! 😨

My Steps So Far…💪🏼

At the time of this post i’m just over 169,000 steps after 8 days…I think the donation on Saturday from the amazing Dayle has turbocharged my steps!! 💪🏼 🤣

Motivational Monday Awards…😲

One of the benefits of killing myself during the crazy challenges i do for the charities close to my heart is…earning the awards from my apple watch. I still can’t believe i’ve had my watch since Feb 2021, as the 500 move goals (1 per day) means i’ve had my watch for over 500 days, wow that’s gone fast! 🤣

Day 6&7/61: Dayle, Donation & Dessert! 💪🏼

Hi FitBlitz Friends!!

You’re never going to believe this (i didn’t)…Me and my lovely wife Sarah were sat in the rear garden of our favourite restaurant (Sicily Restaurant), and just as Grace was placing the stunning ‘Tiramisu’ on to the table…The muppets theme tune blasted out of my pocket from my iPhone!! I looked straight at Sarah (or as near as possible) as we both knew what the tune meant…A donation!! 😲

The Donation…😲

Before i had chance to click through and read the amazing message my phone blasted out again as i’d been awarded the badge above! 💪🏼 The loving donation actually took my fundraising to £166. 😲

Sarah was reading the many shocked looks from my face and asking who it was from? I kept saying you’re never going to believe who it’s from?? I said “it’s in US Dollars again” i said as that too is simply mind blowing for both of us, as knowing there are supporters, friends and amazing people all the way over in the states supporting this blindman is humbling to say the least! “So who is it from?” Sarah said getting more excited now! 🤔

It was from Dayle who never stops encouraging, inspiring and cheering me on from all the way over the atlantic ocean. I really can’t tell you how motivating getting a donation is…It has lifted me and given me such a boost that i’ve now done just over 150,000 steps in the first week. I would have been happy with 125,000 but after this donation i just couldn’t stop…And i can’t thank Dayle enough for always believing in me and supporting me through all of these challenges that can get a little too much some times…But Dayle is relentless at supporting and cheering me on! 💪🏼 😀 🙌

At the time of this post i’m just over 150,000 steps after 7 days…I’m so thankful to my lovely wife Sarah for doing a lap with me Saturday and Sunday to keep my steps up! 😀

Walking At The Weekend…😀

Sarah walked me along the new path next to the big pond (on my left), i can’t really walk down this part as it’s too tricky for me…But when Sarah is with me we love to walk down this track. We did eventually get a photo of me as Sarah kept talking and i was following her voice whilst trying not to fly off the path, lol! 🤣

Day 5/61: ‘One Million Step Challenge For Diabetes UK! ❤️

Hi FitBlitz Friends!!

Wow that train track is close, lol! 😨 I’m so glad i stayed where i was when i took this photo…I thought i wouldn’t get the tracks in the shot, but once i arrived home and zoomed in on my iMac…It’s right there!! 😀 At least i know not to step any closer, and maybe i can get a slow motion video of the train as i can hear when it comes.

At the time of this post i’m just over 115,000 steps after 5 days…I’m hoping for some more steps this evening, as i’m trying to build a surplus before my legs burn off, as you never know what can happen to this blindman whilst out on the trail…So i’ll get the steps in when i can! 💪🏼

Today’s Theme: “Round” 🤔

I spent my walk thinking about what i could post for today’s theme, i was thinking my walking fuel ‘chocolate hob nobs’ are round, lol. So when i arrived home and logged my steps on my page…I instantly received this ‘Round’ award from Diabetes UK, perfect!! 💪🏼 😀

Day 4/61: ‘One Million Step Challenge For Diabetes UK! ❤️

Hi FitBlitz Friends!!

Yay i actually managed to get me and a bit of the trail in a selfie this morning! 😲 I thought i’ve been taking hundreds of photos whilst on my trail walks…But not one of me on the trail which could lead to you thinking i’m just posting anyones photos, lol! 🤣 I can’t see my iPhone at all so don’t take many selfies, mainly as i’m old and think the camera should be pointing the other way (others come first). 🤣

Please let me know if you like seeing me in the frame with the trail, and i’ll have to start trying to get better at it…Meanwhile here is a normal photo of my trail! 🤣

I managed 8.5 miles today in the hot sun and had no dramas. I was trying to slow down to just over 3 mph but my body just won’t slow whilst on the trail…What’s wrong with it, lol! 🤣 😡

After checking the theme for today on the Facebook group and saw it was “W”, i thought a post about ‘Water’ would be very educational and how important it is to stay hydrated. Then i thought – walking, waving and so many more…But there wasn’t a chance i was passing up another opportunity to show off my lovely ‘WARRIOR’ ‘WIFE’ Sarah!!! 🌻 😀

Day 3/61: Meet Sarah’s Walking Warriors! 💪🏼 ❤️

Hi FitBlitz Family!!

When i first posted on Facebook about this crazy challenge and how i wanted to do it in 2 months instead of 3, and for Diabetes UK for my lovely wife Sarah as inspiration and motivation… I received a comment from our friend Anita saying she wanted to do it too! Anita then set up this ‘Sarah’s Walking Warriors‘ fundraising page and i quickly joined. Wow what a name!!! 😀

Anita used to work with Sarah at ‘World Cancer Research Fund’ and quickly became friends with Sarah (who wouldn’t??) so she got to know quite a bit about type one diabetes and soon joined me on this challenge. Anita also was one of the ‘Crazy Clappers’ on my first ‘Blind Steve’ challenge which was the ‘Tough Mudder‘ back in Oct 2018. 💪🏼

Anita is an absolute walking machine and is the master that i’ve always inspired to walk like…Yes you may think that i walk a lot but it’s a proper feeble amount compared with Anita!! So to have her join me on this challenge is fantastic…Unfortunately we both still have to walk one million steps each though…Although i think Anita will finish in a bout a week, lol! 🤣

Day 2/61: ‘One Million Step Challenge For Diabetes UK! ❤️

Hi FitBlitz Family!!

Wow that was tough!! For the last couple of miles i was staggering like a zombie in an 80’s dodgy horror film, lol! 🤣 I know my new extended trail lap is harder as it has more uphill sections, but this was crazy…I was exhausted, dripping with sweat as it’s still hot here and drinking my water like a dying man. But i managed the 9.3 miles (about 19,000 steps) before lunchtime, and i’ve only got 59 days to go, lol! 🤣 😨

The sunflower above is one of Sarah’s in the garden. I managed to earn some more steps last night by watering the flowers…Well once i’d picked myself off the ground after my first 9.3 miles walk yesterday! 🤣 And as this flower hit me in the face…I thought i’d take a photo of it. Wow it’s nearly as bright as a Sarah smile! 😲

At the time of this post i’m just under 43,000 steps after 2 days…I’m hoping for some more steps this afternoon and evening, as i’m trying to build a surplus before my legs explode as you never know what each day will bring…So i’ll get the steps in when i can! 💪🏼

After checking the theme for today on the Facebook group and telling Sarah it was “Grey”. She jumped up and said “I know just the thing”, wow i’ve not even got my walking gear on yet, lol! 🤣 Yay it’s Boofle and his “Grey” coffee please t-shirt! Awww and do i need coffee today! 😀

Day 1/61: ‘One Million Step Challenge For Diabetes UK! ❤️

Hi FitBlitz Family!!

Well this is it, the start of my gruelling 500 mile step challenge. I put on my stupendous new trail shoes, my backpack with water, lucozade and maybe a protein bar or two, lol…When Sarah said “Quick you need to have a photo for the start of your challenge, and to show the Fitblitz family that you’ve started”…Above is the photo of the old blind guy trying to walk 500 miles, lol! 🤣

Steps…

I managed a 9.3 mile (2 of my new laps) to kick off this morning steps. It worked out at 19,062 steps, so i quickly logged it on my fundraising page…A good start and i still have more to come on this first day! 😀

Today’s Theme: Pink…

During this challenge i’d joined the ‘One million step’ Facebook group, and they have a theme for each day to keep things interesting. As you know i like taking photos but i was stumped on my very first theme…It was ‘Pink’. You will also know that i’m blind but i’m also colour blind too and i see pinks as silver, lol! 🤣 So Sarah (as we are a team) took my phone and went into the garden as she had just the thing to complete the theme, yay!! 💪🏼

The incredible donation…

I’d just walked alongside the rail crossing in the intense heat and was very tired (no i didn’t play chicken with the train, lol) and i was about 7 miles into my walk when…The jolly muppets theme tune blasted my ears off letting me know i’ve just received a donation! The donation was from my lovely wife Sarah and she’d left me this message “Thanks for doing this amazing challenge to support diabetes UK my lovely husband. I just wanted to contribute and get you started on what is going to be a very tiring 2 months ahead. You can do it !!!“. It means so much to me that i have Sarah’s blessing, encouragement and support, it floods my heart! ❤️

Not only was this a fantastic donation which has boosted my motivation like a turbocharger…But it meant i passed the £100 milestone which means Diabetes UK will now send me out a ‘one million step’ t-shirt to wear! 😲 Of course when it arrives i’ll get lots of photos for you. Now to hit the £250 milestone which means i’ll earn the 400ml water bottle…I need lots of water!! 💪🏼 😀

For the last 18 years since meeting my ‘T1D Warrior Wife Sarah’, i’ve always wanted to be a ‘Sarah’s Walking Warrior’ and raise money for Diabetes…So here is the 4th ‘Blind Steve’ fundraising challenge…💪🏼

Support Blind Steve in the Diabetes UK – One Million Step Challenge

Diabetes is relentless and simply never stops…But neither do I!

For the last 18 years i’ve seen first hand how my lovely wife Sarah battles, struggles and copes with her ‘brittle Type 1’ diabetes. She’s such a warrior and is truly my inspiration on perseverance, determination and drive to keep fighting. 

So last week, when I heard of the ‘One Million Step Challenge’  i had to sign up straight away. I’ve always wanted to fundraise for Diabetes UK and show Sarah how much it means to me too, and this is my chance! 

I realise this challenge has already started (running from 1st July to 30th September 2022). Requiring participants to walk a million steps over those three months. My cunning plan is to start the challenge on Monday 1st August and try and walk the one million steps in two months instead! This works out at over 16,000 steps each day, for the 61 days, without a rest…That’s 500 miles! I will post daily on FitBlitz and give you all of the progress, dramas on my walks and hopefully some lovely photos too! 😀

Figure Of 8 Friday: Yay my new 5 mile lap! 💪🏼

Hi FitBlitz Family!!

Today’s training was trying my new figure of 8 trail (wow just like the Scalextric when i was a kid, lol) although i only sat down and pressed a trigger for that one and didn’t have to walk 500 miles! Maybe i’ll try a gaming charity challenge next time, lol! 🤣

I walked around my new trail and it was exactly 5 miles from (and to) my door step. The actual trail once in the woods (i measured it with segments on my apple watch) was 4.2 miles…I’ll be walking 2 or 3 of these laps each day from Monday!! 😨

Diabetes UK – One Million Step Challenge Training: 4 days to go!

Hi FitBlitz Family!!

Today’s training was to try (for the final time) to add an extra loop to my trusted 2.5 mile trail. I told Sarah roughly where i’d be in case i fell down a hole, got ran over or simply just got lost. She said she’d check my location on ‘find my friends’ if i’m too long, lol! 🤣 So here i go…

I walked off my route and down to the furthest point of my walk and launched my iPhone maps app. I knew there was a road that went in the general direction of home but i didn’t know how i get there or if there was a pavement (sidewalk) next to the road…I also knew there’s a train line very close and i wouldn’t survive being run over by a train but i might survive being run over by a car though, lol. As i can’t see my phone i generally use ‘Siri’ so i asked for directions home so it would take me up this unknown route…But Siri didn’t work as no connection, fantastic! 😀

So using ‘Voiceover’ i managed to get the step by step audio directions going, and it wasn’t long before i was very tentatively walking up the road! I wasn’t doing my usual confident charge (as i do on my usual lap) but i was shuffling like a cross between a penguin and a duck, as i though at any time i’d either fall down a massive hole…Or worse twist and sprain an ankle, knee or neck! 🤣 After about half a mile i finally popped out on a road i recognised, and after another short walk i ended up back on the ‘triangle’ part of my normal trail lap! 💪🏼 😀 I stopped to close the app as (after 3 years of trying) i’d actually made an extra loop and put about an additional 1 mile to my trail lap…When i heard some clip clopping a little like the sound of the Monty Python cast hitting coconuts in the holy grail movie…I quickly moved to the edge of the path and waited for the noise to pass…🤔

Once i returned home and zoomed rightt in on the photos, i could see it wasn’t the cast of Monty Python but a couple of real horses! 🤣 Thankfully the horses weren’t hungry and didn’t chew my arms off, and as i slowly followed they didn’t leave a mountain of manure for me to wade through…Which i’m really glad about as i have 500 miles to do in 61 days on this trail starting Monday, lol! 🤣

Blind Steve’s ‘One Million Step Challenge‘ For Diabetes UK…Just 1 week to go!! 😨

Hi FitBlitz Friends! . Now these bad boys really put the ‘Motivation’ in to Monday, lol! 🤣 On Saturday me and my lovely wife Sarah visited Fitstuff in Guildford, Surrey, UK, to hopefully buy some more trail shoes ready for my next FitBlitzing fundraiser for Diabetes UK starting in 1 week. As i’ve already put about 350 miles on my old Inov8 Terraultra G270 trail shoes (thanks to the trail marathon & all of the training) i needed a new pair as this latest challenge is 500 miles (that’s the complete life of a pair of trail shoes). As my current super bright orange trail shoes still have 150 miles left, i wanted a pair that were a little more cushioned (as it’s way further than i’ve been before) but still just like my current ones as they are amazing…So when i asked the incredibly helpful ‘Megan’ at Fitstuff…She presented me with these bad boys!!! 😲 💪🏼

The INOV8 TrailFly Ultra G300 MAX Trail Shoes…😲

Have you seen the colour??!! In real life they are even brighter, lol! I just love bright shoes and Inov8 never disappoint…I can’t see my feet so i don’t have to be blinded by them (pun intended). 🤣

I’ve already taken them out on the trail with my lovely wife Sarah and put 7 miles on them. They are super cushioned with a 6mm heel toe drop yet i can still feel everything that’s going on under my feet…I always wear minimal shoes as i rely on using my feet to see where i’m going, and these seemed to be massively cushioned yet sensitive to my feel…Fantastic! I love them so much that i don’t want to burn them out over 2 months!! 😭

The blindman is off the sidelines again…And while God gives me the strength in my legs…i’ll use them for doing crazy fundraising challenges to help others! I really didn’t want to fill this blog with annoying fundraising asks, as my last fundraiser ‘Trail Marathon‘ was only in April 2022…But you know me…And when i stumbled across this ‘One Million Step Challenge’ and found it was for Diabetes UK i just had to do something!

For the last 18 years since meeting my ‘T1D Warrior Wife Sarah’, i’ve always wanted to be a ‘Sarah’s Walking Warrior’ and raise money for Diabetes…So here is the 4th ‘Blind Steve’ fundraising challenge…💪🏼

Support Blind Steve in the Diabetes UK – One Million Step Challenge

Diabetes is relentless and simply never stops…But neither do I!

For the last 18 years i’ve seen first hand how my lovely wife Sarah battles, struggles and copes with her ‘brittle Type 1’ diabetes. She’s such a warrior and is truly my inspiration on perseverance, determination and drive to keep fighting. 

So last week, when I heard of the ‘One Million Step Challenge’  i had to sign up straight away. I’ve always wanted to fundraise for Diabetes UK and show Sarah how much it means to me too, and this is my chance! 

I realise this challenge has already started (running from 1st July to 30th September 2022). Requiring participants to walk a million steps over those three months. My cunning plan is to start the challenge on Monday 1st August and try and walk the one million steps in two months instead! This works out at over 16,000 steps each day, for the 61 days, without a rest

Type 1 diabetes never gives Sarah a rest, so I don’t want to have one either during my fundraising challenge…The nature reserve trail is going to get a pounding again, lol! 🤣

Motivational Monday: Spring in your step! 🌻

Hi fitness family. Hope you’ve had a great weekend and are nicely refreshed for a new week of smashing goals? I went out on the trail this morning and walked 6 miles (2 laps), and i have no dramas to talk about! 💪🏼 But that doesn’t stop me from boring you to death with more photos of trees, lol! 🤣

I say there were no dramas, but only just…I was walking down the trail (quite a narrow part), and i heard a galloping over the audiobook i have playing in one ear. I thought “Woah i wonder which side that horse is going to go as it thunders towards me?” I quickly stepped off the path into what i hoped wasn’t a ditch, slope or hole…It was far enough out of the way as the horse (and cart) flew past me and didn’t flatten me, i think i’d struggle to write this post in hospital…And you’d have nothing to read lol! 🤣

The trail trees were much more beautiful too now that Spring has ensconced them in leaves. They provide a lovely shelter which gives more contrast which makes it easier (and less painful) for me to walk around. So instead of posting lots of boney, iced and winter trail images for you to enjoy, i can post lots of green, flowery spring and summer ones instead for you to get quickly fed up with, lol! 🤣

Yay…I’m Back! 💪🏼 😀

Hi fitness family! Can you believe it’s been a whole calendar month since the ‘Trail Marathon‘, and i’ve only just stopped feasting and celebrating the monumental milestone!! 😲 It’s been a real mountain top experience for me, and smashing my goals was fantastic…But i’ve also crash landed at the bottom without any new goals to attack! 😨

Until…🤔

I finally went out walking on the trail again this morning and managed 2 laps (5.70 miles), and it felt like i’d never stopped! Even though all of the feasting and celebrating meant i’d put on quite a few pounds, which also means i’ve now got a new goal…Get my excess fat off, lol! 💪🏼 🤣 I was getting a little lost trying to come up with more and more goals, and doing another fundraiser so soon after the last one was out of the question, even though they are the best motivators, lol)…So it’s time to get back in and attack my goals to get my nice new suit (Sarah bought it me for losing 5 stone) fitting again! 💪🏼

Triumphant Trail Marathon: 27.05 Miles!!!🧡😰

Blindman Trail Marathon: 24/04/2022…

Hi all! Whilst sitting here typing in this body of pain, and before i thank all of you amazingly kind and generous people…I just wanted to reassure you that i wasn’t cheating (in case you were wondering why there were 2 people in Sarah’s photos), even though my friend Dan (his friend has MS and he wanted to challenge himself and do it for her too) joined me on the marathon. He kindly walked slightly behind me and let the blindman lead…Both me and my lovely wife Sarah were so thankful to have him join me, not only as the medic if i collapsed, lol…But he had never done anything like this before but wanted to really push himself (he’ll regret that, lol! 💪🏼 🤣

The Trail Marathon Preperations…☕

Waking up at 7am which left me plenty of time to get me and my backpack ready for the start. My lovely wife Sarah had made me another esprsso (wow they’re tasty) and i had my bottle of water, Lucozade sport and 12 hob nobs, so now we just wondered if Dan would turn up. As you know i’ve done 7 months training completely on my own, so i was a little worried if i could do this as i’d never walked (never mind talked) to anyone else whilst focusing so hard. Dan then turned up bang on time with his backpack of goodies so we were ready to do this. Dan has not trained at all for this or ever even seen the trail yet either so he had no idea where he was going…Well let the blindman step up and lead him, lol! 🤣

The Plan…🤔

Our plan was to walk 5 laps (half marathon) then come home for a toilet stop (thanks water tablets for making this challenge even harder), quick espresso and flapjack whilst not sitting down and seizing up, then after a maximum of 10 minutes get back out and finish the next 5 laps…Sounds great on paper, lol! 🤣 During my longest walk in training i came back home for this same stop and it worked, so how hard can it be?! 🤣

Let the trail marathon begin…💪🏼

If you’ve been following my training progress over the last 7 months, you’ll know that all i’m asking for today is lots of clouds and grey everywhere…It wasn’t!! 🤣

The 10 mile mark: Our 1st milestone…💪🏼

Our 1st milestone was to get to 10 miles (double figures) as this seemed more serious mileage, and it’d be a good indicator point to check how things are going?! We both were doing remarkably well and Dan liked the trail so far…Although those few inclines were starting to get on our nerves, lol! 🤣

Even though the sun was drilling it’s way through my eyes and into my brain, the good thing about it was the trail was completely dry!! I couldn’t believe it as for 7 months it’s been constantly wet and full of puddles, my feet were always sludgy and cold from deep puddles of dripping mud…But today there wasn’t a drop anywhere! 💪🏼 🙌

The Halfway Mark…😀 ☕

Arriving home after dodging dog walkers, runners and crazy cyclists we were nicely on schedule. I’d been messaging Sarah after every lap to let her know i wasn’t dead, and she even took the coffee orders for half time…Wow she’s amazing! ☕ 😀 So when we arrived the lovely coffees were handed to us as we had to be quick. We were feeling surprisingly good and happy that we’d completed half and still felt this happy…Now just do the same again and it’s done…Sounded good when i said it anyway! 💪🏼

Then we started lap 6: Let the pain begin…

“Hey what’s happening?” i said as the pain started a 360˚ motion around both of my knees, and Dan says that his feet are really hurting too. “Now i know why people do half marathons instead of full ones” i said whilst rubbing the side of my knee “I was really happy a minute ago”. 🤔

Lap 7: Time to break out the lucozade…😰

The pain seemed to gain lots more friends as it sliced through my calves, thighs and feet as we reached the ¾ mark. Our pace was steadily dropping every mile as we started giving up on lap times and started focusing on simply finishing! Dan said “I was going to wait until lap 9 for the lucozade boost…But now is the time”. I quickly joined him and it was a nice break from just water. The smooth orange taste was like syrup and felt like one of those running gels! 😋I’m not sure about Dan but it had no effect at all, i was expecting a Popeye type boost but nothing happened! 😭

Lap 8: What another 2 more laps…😰

With no boost from either the Lucozade, the hob nobs or the stupendous flapjack at half time…I knew this is all the energy i was going to have. The inclines felt like mountains and each bump and dip started to smash my knees and pop my hips out…It felt like i needed a really tight belt around my hips just to keep them from flying out as both legs fell off! Other than this i was fine, lol! 🤣

Lap 9: Just don’t stop…💪🏼

As we started lap 9 and entered my new personal best distance with every step, i knew i just had to hang on in there somehow. The constant sun had completely fried my brain so talking was at a minimum as both of us were just trying to get around this beautiful but punishing trail…I used to enjoy walking around here, lol! 🤣 “Hey what are you doing?” i said to my legs as they were slowing right down to stop “Don’t even think about stopping, it’s not you that needs to stop it’s MS that got to stop” i continued quietly telling myself, thankfully i managed to carry on dragging them! 💪🏼 🧡

Lap 10: Yay Sarah’s Here…!! 😀

“Wow you’re full of beans” i said to Sarah as she was zipping around us full of energy, as me and Dan were like 2 zombies shuffling along. I’m so pleased she was as all of these photo memories were by Sarah as she joined us on lap 4 & 10, thank you so much my lovely for these great memories. “Smile and wave your arms around” Sarah shouts as i try and remove my painful agony face that was permanently set…And my arms were just hanging there like floppy dead things, so how she managed to capture us looking like we’re enjoying ourselves is simply fantastic, lol! 🤣

Then the 26.2 Mile ANNOUNCEMENT…🙌

I love this photo as it shows me and Dan expressing relief that all of this pain is finally over, jubilation that we’d actually completed a whole marathon…But also the realisation that we’re still on the trail and nearly a mile away from home with no chance of teleportation!!!! 😨 🤣

Getting back home was a mixture of emotions. Yay we’d completed the marathon which was unbelievable, yet we still had the agonising walk back home. Once we reached our lane Dan even took his trainers off as his feet were beyond hurting…Is 27.05 miles classed as an ultra marathon or is that pushing it a little?! 🤔Once we did make it back home and we actually stopped, the tidal wave of tiredness hit us and we didn’t know how long we had before our bones and muscles seized up completely?! 🤔

The Sparkling Celebration…🥂🍾

As we finally got the chance to take off our backpacks and me and Dan were attempting a stretch or two…My lovely wife Sarah had popped the cork on a bottle of Prosecco and was pouring a couple of glasses for us, she’d planned all of this without us knowing and wanted us to pose for the finishing shot. We couldn’t drink it unfortunately as we were just too tired. 😰Also Dan still had to drive home and knew if he didn’t leave quickly he’d be completely seized up!! 💪🏼 😀

The Recovery BARBECUE Sizzler…🍕

Once Dan had messaged to say he’d arrived home safely, it was time to order the post marathon pizza! I decided to choose this 18″ beast as it had chicken, onion and mixed peppers (healthy option, lol) and a cheese stuffed crust!! 😋 Now i just need to walk another marathon to burn it off! 🤣

It’s already taken me 2 days to put this post together whilst still in pain, so i want to thank you properly in another post when i’m fully recovered…But all of your cheering, encouraging comments and generosity have helped carry me through the hardest thing i’ve ever done! Thanks for how you’ve all made me feel throughout this challenge and the 7 months of training!! 😀

FitBlitzing Friday: Fast & Furious!

Blindman Trail Marathon Taper…3.29 Miles…Only 16 Days To Go!!!

Hi friends. This morning was a case of setting my legs to a 4mph pace, then attempting to stay upright as my upper body tries to catch up, lol! 🤣 It’s really hard for me to keep this kind of pace, as at any moment i keep thinking i’m going to hit a tree and knock myself out…Thankfully i made it today! 💪🏼 😀

I hope you’re not getting too fed up of looking at photos of trees?! I keep forgetting i’m actually walking through a lovely nature reserve, as i’m so stressed and laser focussed on my surroundings and my body that i miss it all. So i try and take a photo or two so i can zoom right into it on my computer at home…I still can’t see much of it but it’s better than completely missing out! 😀

Wet n’ Windy Wednesday: The Tuna Manwich! 😋

Blindman Trail Marathon Taper…3.73Miles…Only 18 Days To Go!!!

Hi friends! The rain arrived with it’s friend the wind this morning and they seemed to surround me with malevolent intent. Sarah had to walk to the local post box first thing so we got soaked together…Then as she started work in her office (nice and warm) i had to go back outside to start my lap! 😭

There were an innumerable amount of bigger puddles on the trail today which appeared to be ganging up on me, lol. It was quite cold but not too cold, so i was wearing a puffer coat with my shorts on, a weird mix but it worked…Oh and it seems my earpiece is waterproof too! I only wear 1 as i need to hear what’s around me at all times…Well i seem to need to hear the ferocious dogs as they tear me to pieces! 😨

When i finally arrived home and dried off my lovely wife Sarah had made me a ‘Super Tuna Manwich’. Sorry i devoured it before i had time to take a photo for you…But in case you’re wondering what it is…? It had 2 tins of tuna mixed with diced onions and salad cream (the low fat one), chunky cucumber slices, beetroot and ensconced within 2 slices of 7 seed wholemeal bread…It was a proper tower of tuna! 🤣 💪🏼 😋

Tread Ware Tuesday: Keep Walking Towards The Prize! 🧡

Blindman Trail Marathon Taper…3.30Miles…Only 19 Days To Go!!!

Hi friends. Yay the rain has stopped and it’s temperature has actually sneaked into double figures and is quite warm. I’m liking this 3 week taper before the trail marathon as i can trundle along, listening to my audiobook as i try and save the tread on my super bright orange trail shoes

It was very quiet again out on the trail…I’m starting to wonder were all of the people have gone? I’m not complaining at all as it’s way less stressful, but i bet they’re waiting for the day of my trail marathon, then they will flood the trail to make it impossible for me to complete it, lol! 🤣

My Award Challenge This Month …🏆

Wow i only needed to get 26 days of the move ring last year, but now it’s all 3 rings i have to close this year!! I’ve blitzed out of the blocks hoping for a good start as i can’t drop many days to earn this one! 💪🏼 😀

It was also good this morning on my lap as it was empty, i think i only passed 1 person with a dog there are normally loads. IThere was no glaring sun burning my eyes so i could just saunter around listening to my audiobook. The only down side was the rain…I had my full waterproofs (hood and everything) so i was happy not to race around the trail…So even the rain was a good thing, lol! 🤣

Yay…Personal Best Walking Record…21.56 miles! 😲

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 11/12 – Day 4…21.56 Miles…😲

Hi friends. Yay, yay, yay and another yay…I can’t tell you how happy i am right now, after completing my longest walk ever – 21.56 miles in 6 hours 3 minutes!!! 😀

As you can imagine my legs are tight, stiff and slightly painful as i’m typing this…But wow was it worth it! 💪🏼

After this long walk this will be a short post, as i just wanted to let you all know ‘I DID IT’ without any dramas too! I stomped around the trail at 3.6 mph eating 16 Oaties (Lidl’s version of Hob Nobs) and when i returned with a huge grin on my exhausted face…I was greeted with lots of bings from my apple watch as i was awarded lots of new records, yay!! 💪🏼 I’m off to rest now! 😀

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 11/12 – Day 2…6 Miles…💪🏼

Hi all. Yay the sun has finally gone, and it’s a great day for a walk (for me anyway, lol) as it’s overcast and grey so no burning my eyes out of the sockets! 💪🏼 However it’s going to chuck it down over the next few days, which is when i plan to attempt my longest walk ever…smashing 20 miles!

I may…Or may not hit my record later this week, but i’m going to give it my all even though i’ll be soaked, lol! 🤣 Then i start the 3 week taper (finally) until crunch time!!! 😰

Terminator Thursday: 16.4 Miles!

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 10/12 – Day 4…16.4 Miles…💪🏼

Hi friends. Well that was a complete surprise…I knew i had a massive 6 laps today and i was filled with trepidation…But once i got my swift walk (for me anyway) of 3.9mph (awww just under the magic 4mph) and i felt good, i kept this pace for the whole 4 hours 15 minutes! I was like a machine, lol! 🤣

Walking Stats…

I am happy to report there were no feral dogs out today, only well behaved ones so no dramas sorry! 😭 After a brief 10 minute collapse when i arrived home, i felt better than ever and was pleased to be greeted with a fresh coffee and a Manwich by my lovely wife Sarah! ❤️

Awards & Badges…

Happy to have achieved another award this week especially after the long walk today! I have 1 more super long walk next week…I’m hoping for a personal best and smash the 20 mile mark!! Then it’s a 3 week taper (finally) until crunch time!!! 😰

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 10/12 – Day 3…8 Miles…💪🏼

Hi friends. I’m slowly getting used to this warm weather, extra water intake and wearing shorts with the bright orange MS Society t-shirt. Although i’ll never get used to my eyes burning out of my sockets (even with Sarah’s fantastic Oakley’s) and by the time i’d finished 8 miles today i was roasted and toasted! 😨

The sun has improved lunchtimes though…Me and Sarah now sit out in our back garden where i can have my ‘Manwich’ sat bathing in the sun! ☀️

Then i remembered i had a guitar lesson on Zoom…Wow my brain was fried by concentrating on walking for a couple of hours in the blinding sun, and i could hardly play, lol…But i did manage a screenshot…Now that’s progress!! 🤣

Turn Up The Heat Tuesday!

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 10/12 – Day 2…9 Miles…💪🏼

Hi all. Well it’s 19˚C today and i was happy to wear just a t-shirt and shorts. It’s going to stay warm all week and i still have a 17 mile walk to do, that’ll be some more water intake than usual…Like today as i needed water much quicker! 😰

My lovely wife Sarah lent me her Oakley Flak 2.0 polarised sunglasses to try as the sun is getting too bright. I’m trying them all this week with my baseball cap, and so far i think they are making a tiny fraction of a difference…But if you know what it’s like to be blind, that’s a huge improvement! 💪🏼 😀 I’m using this whole week to test them out!

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 10/12 – Day 1…6 Miles…💪🏼

Hi all. I certainly had some more motivation this morning doing the 2 laps for Monday’s training. The 12Oz Sarah Sizzling sirloin steak (every Sunday lunch) yesterday, closing all 7 day’s activity rings, another 2 donations and knowing i have to do 46 exercise minutes a day for the rest of the month to achieve the ‘March Challenge’ badge really got me ready for another week’s training! 💪🏼

Feral Friday: Who Let The Dogs Out?! 😨

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 9/12 – Day 5…6 Miles…💪🏼

Hi Friends. Well at least i now know why lots of blind people stay (trapped) indoors…Not 1 but 2 attempts of stopping my charity challenge through dog attacks!

The first one came at around the 1.5 mile mark, the yapping and growling made me jump. At least it was a yapper which meant it was a small dog so i stood a chance of surviving. I felt the thud from my right side as the dogs paws clamped the front and the back of my knee, trying to hold me in a death grip so it could sink it’s teeth in…But the momentum of me continuing to walk threw it off before the hungry, gaping, growling muzzle could do it’s damage. I’ve learned to keep walking as if i stop the dog can get a proper hold before the owner (i hope) can call off their feral dog. “Wow” i thought as i checked my knee for any scratches…There were none, yay! “What a walk this is turning out to be, lol”. 😀

Ten minutes later after i’d walked up the steepest slope the second attack happened…This time the growling didn’t start until the beast (it was another yapper) clamped it’s jaws around the top of my running shoes and tried to rag my laces off like i was a huge toy! The growling had started now and the sudden clamp onto my foot made me jump again…But like before i kept on walking and thankfully the dog didn’t have lockjaw and soon let go, but not until it had a last ditch attack up my hamstrings but it failed again, yay!

I’m so glad i get the chance to write all of the daily adventures down that i have on the trail…As you’d think i’m just making this up, lol! 🤣 I was glad i stayed out for 6 miles (2 laps) even though all of this happened on lap 1 and i did just want to go home and feel sorry for myself…But “No laps…No flapjack” 😋

Feculent Thursday: Half Marathon…Full Sludge Bog!

Blindman Trail Marathon Training – Week 9/12 – Day 4…13.29 Miles…💪🏼

Hi all. Now i can safely say…That was the worst walk i’ve ever done, and if the event day is anything like this one i’m not sure i can do it! 😭 The sun was so bright this morning i couldn’t even stay on the trail. I spent so much time ankle deep in disgustingly muddy puddles and bogs my feet felt like wet bricks. So even though i’d managed a half marathon…My celebration is short lived as i think i’m off to bed to recover! 😨

I’ll try and described my sight for you whilst on the walk this morning with the amazingly bright sun (not joking this time)…It was like smearing vaseline in both eyes whilst shining a 12,000 lumin torch directly into my face. The trail was also a complete white out, yet not quite white as a mushy pea green…But remember i’m also colour blind so not exactly sure what colour that is?! Oh and my eyes are constantly running too which drips down my cheeks onto my knees…Blurry doesn’t even come close to describing it…Oh and sunglasses don’t work and make it worse, and i wear a peaked baseball cap too!

I lost count on the times i suddenly dropped into a proper deep sludge bog, with both feet that almost popped out my hip bones. I simply couldn’t stay on the trail and lost my way so many times i couldn’t believe it, as i thought i’d got the trail nailed in my head, but i was getting so distracted and getting more and more fed up with every cold wet foot plop.

Having said all of that…I’m happy to have battled my way around the worst walk ever and completed 5 laps which is just over a half marathon…Well it’s easier now i’m back home and sat safely typing this eating my ‘Manwich’ and drinking a stupendous coffee made by my lovely wife Sarah! ❤️🤣
